About This Event

Baja calls itself the capital of halászlé, the paprika-red Danube fish soup, and the festival is the town's big summer gathering. Amateur cooks and teams set up cauldrons in the centre and stir the soup over open fire, with the main cooking day on the Saturday. Around the cooking there are concerts, markets and family programmes, and the entry to the town-centre part is free while some stage programmes at Petőfi Island need a ticket. It began as a one-off celebration of the town and has run every July since.

What's on

The 26th festival ran 6-8 July 2023 on Holy Trinity Square and Petőfi Island with more than 50 performers. On Saturday 8 July the mayor Klára Nyirati lit the first cauldron at an unusual 17:30. 500 cooks could cook on the square; about 5,000 kg of fish were cooked in all. Stage acts included Hooligans, Irigy Hónaljmirigy, Pápai Joci, Horváth Tamás, Wellhello, Curtis, Király Viktor and Bohémek; the Halfőzőfeszt DJ festival opened at 21:00 on the island, and a Children's Street (Gyerekutca) debuted.

On the menu

  • Bajai halászlé (Baja fish soup, carp, paprika, onion, served with gyufatészta pasta)
How to read festival information

We work to keep festival information right, but festivals are run by others and details change. Here is how to read what you see on SoupFestivals.

Confirmed or expected

A confirmed date was announced for that edition. An expected date, such as "usually held around mid-October", is an estimate based on past editions, not an announcement.

Places can be approximate

We show a map pin and directions only when the venue's location is verified. If it is still unconfirmed, we keep the known venue name and town without a pin.

Check before you travel

Dates, prices, menus and venues can change, and festivals can be cancelled. Always confirm with the organizer before you go. If their information differs from ours, theirs is the one to follow.
