About This Event
Baja calls itself the capital of halászlé, the paprika-red Danube fish soup, and the festival is the town's big summer gathering. Amateur cooks and teams set up cauldrons in the centre and stir the soup over open fire, with the main cooking day on the Saturday. Around the cooking there are concerts, markets and family programmes, and the entry to the town-centre part is free while some stage programmes at Petőfi Island need a ticket. It began as a one-off celebration of the town and has run every July since.

What's on
The first festival marked the 300th anniversary of Baja becoming a town, under the slogan '300 years old town, 300 cauldrons of fish soup'. Organisers hoped to recruit 300 cooks and ended up with 463 cauldrons on Holy Trinity Square on Saturday 13 July 1996, all cooking the same recipe, which was entered in the Guinness records. Each cook received 3 kg of live carp donated by fish farmer Ferenc Pintér of Nagybaracska. The idea was born in the Paradicsom snack bar in autumn 1995 and worked out by Béla Béres and Attila Martonosi. Its success decided the city to repeat it every year.
