About This Event

Baja calls itself the capital of halászlé, the paprika-red Danube fish soup, and the festival is the town's big summer gathering. Amateur cooks and teams set up cauldrons in the centre and stir the soup over open fire, with the main cooking day on the Saturday. Around the cooking there are concerts, markets and family programmes, and the entry to the town-centre part is free while some stage programmes at Petőfi Island need a ticket. It began as a one-off celebration of the town and has run every July since.

What's on

After two years without the usual festival, the 25th edition ran on Friday 8 and Saturday 9 July 2022 (a shorter programme than before; some listings say 7-9 July) around Holy Trinity Square and on Petőfi Island. The organiser reported more than 20,000 visitors; side events included boat trips and a programme for the fire brigade's 150th anniversary, and a foreign act was announced.

On the menu

  • Bajai halászlé (Baja fish soup, carp, paprika, onion, served with gyufatészta pasta)
How to read festival information

We work to keep festival information right, but festivals are run by others and details change. Here is how to read what you see on SoupFestivals.

Confirmed or expected

A confirmed date was announced for that edition. An expected date, such as "usually held around mid-October", is an estimate based on past editions, not an announcement.

Places can be approximate

We show a map pin and directions only when the venue's location is verified. If it is still unconfirmed, we keep the known venue name and town without a pin.

Check before you travel

Dates, prices, menus and venues can change, and festivals can be cancelled. Always confirm with the organizer before you go. If their information differs from ours, theirs is the one to follow.
