About This Event
Kjötsúpudagurinn, the Icelandic Meat Soup Day, began as a neighbourhood idea by two Skólavörðustígur shopkeepers and grew into a street party with chefs, farmers and thousands of visitors. Several restaurants run soup stations along the street, each with its own take on the lamb, root vegetable and rice soup, and the first bowl traditionally goes to the inmates of the old Hegningarhúsið prison. Soup is free and served in the early afternoon until it runs out, which it usually does. Queues are part of the fun, so go at the start.

Morgunblaðið (22 October 2010) announced fair weather for the 'meat soup feast' the next day, and on the day (23 October) reported many people enjoying soup. It names Jóhann Jónsson of Ostabúðin as the originator of the day and says it was first held eight years earlier. Vísir TV covered the day on 25 October 2010.
