About This Event

Kjötsúpudagurinn, the Icelandic Meat Soup Day, began as a neighbourhood idea by two Skólavörðustígur shopkeepers and grew into a street party with chefs, farmers and thousands of visitors. Several restaurants run soup stations along the street, each with its own take on the lamb, root vegetable and rice soup, and the first bowl traditionally goes to the inmates of the old Hegningarhúsið prison. Soup is free and served in the early afternoon until it runs out, which it usually does. Queues are part of the fun, so go at the start.

What's on

Official poster: 18th/19th Meat Soup Day Read it

Held 1 to 4 pm (13:00 to 16:00) on Saturday 23 October, the last confirmed in-person edition. Six restaurants took part (Kaffi Loki, Krua Thai, Sjávargrillið, Snaps, Ostabúðin, Reykjavík Fish), with seven soup stations in the street. About 5,000 portions were served and every pot ran out well before the announced closing time; a brief rain shower did not dampen the mood. Press say about ten thousand people come every year and long queues form up the whole street. The numbering differs: Bændablaðið calls it the 19th, Veitingageirinn the 18th. The poster is the 'Fögnum vetri' (Let us welcome winter) banner of the Icelandic Lamb campaign: a table with a bowl of soup and the line 'with varied Icelandic meat soup, naturally'.

On the menu

  • Café Loki
  • Krua Thai
  • Reykjavik Fish Restaurant
  • Sjávargrillið
  • Snaps bistro
  • Ostabúðin veisluþjónusta
How to read festival information

We work to keep festival information right, but festivals are run by others and details change. Here is how to read what you see on SoupFestivals.

Confirmed or expected

A confirmed date was announced for that edition. An expected date, such as "usually held around mid-October", is an estimate based on past editions, not an announcement.

Places can be approximate

We show a map pin and directions only when the venue's location is verified. If it is still unconfirmed, we keep the known venue name and town without a pin.

Check before you travel

Dates, prices, menus and venues can change, and festivals can be cancelled. Always confirm with the organizer before you go. If their information differs from ours, theirs is the one to follow.
