About This Event
Amateur cooks compete on Saturday and professional kitchens on Sunday, serving Boston and Manhattan chowder from booths along the Boardwalk with the beach behind them. Visitors buy a tasting kit, try the chowders and vote for People's Choice; judges pick the best of each style. It began indoors in a mini-golf building and moved outside in 1985. Entry to the Boardwalk is free and kit sales fund Santa Cruz Parks & Recreation.

The 41st annual event, back on the Boardwalk after the 2021 takeout edition, on Saturday 26 and Sunday 27 February 2022; free admission, $12 tasting kits. The Boardwalk thanked everyone who came to 'shell-abrate' and voted. Wilma Lott Catering (Team Clamdestine) took first place; City Parks and Recreation said the cook-off raised over $80,000 that year (reported in 2023).
