About This Event

Kjötsúpudagurinn, the Icelandic Meat Soup Day, began as a neighbourhood idea by two Skólavörðustígur shopkeepers and grew into a street party with chefs, farmers and thousands of visitors. Several restaurants run soup stations along the street, each with its own take on the lamb, root vegetable and rice soup, and the first bowl traditionally goes to the inmates of the old Hegningarhúsið prison. Soup is free and served in the early afternoon until it runs out, which it usually does. Queues are part of the fun, so go at the start.

What's on

The eleventh year in a row, dedicated to the memory of musician and artist Jóhann G. Jóhannsson, whose idea the day originally was and who wrote the song 'Íslensk kjötsúpa'. Served from 2 pm with accordion music and poetry. Five stations; the prisoners of Hegningarhúsið got the first bowl. Chefs from Hótel Holt (Friðgeir Ingi and Eiríkur) and Snaps (Stefán Melsteð and Sigurgísli) cooked about a thousand litres. The brothers Ólafur and Stefán Ingi Stefánsson of the health shop Góð heilsa gulli betri served a soy-meat soup for people who cannot eat meat, calling it the 'Djötsúpudagur'.

How to read festival information

We work to keep festival information right, but festivals are run by others and details change. Here is how to read what you see on SoupFestivals.

Confirmed or expected

A confirmed date was announced for that edition. An expected date, such as "usually held around mid-October", is an estimate based on past editions, not an announcement.

Places can be approximate

We show a map pin and directions only when the venue's location is verified. If it is still unconfirmed, we keep the known venue name and town without a pin.

Check before you travel

Dates, prices, menus and venues can change, and festivals can be cancelled. Always confirm with the organizer before you go. If their information differs from ours, theirs is the one to follow.
