Visitors buy a tasting kit, try the chowders and vote for People's Choice; judges pick the best of each style. It began indoors in a mini-golf building and moved outside in 1985. Pandemic edition: the 40th cook-off was 'reimagined' as a takeout Restaurant Week, 15 to 21 February 2021. Restaurants (entry fee $100, Boston chowder only) featured their chowder on the menu; the public bought a $10 passport that gave a voting code and a raffle entry; official blind judging was hosted by the Boardwalk, People's Choice was decided by online voting and winners were announced 22 February. Tasting flights of 6 to 12 restaurants' chowders were sold for pickup at the Boardwalk on Saturday 20 February ($12 kits were also advertised). The numbering was kept: it counts as the 40th.
